Meo Vac – a stopover in the journey of “Caring for newborns in remote areas”

For us, the final hospital could be Viet Duc, Bach Mai, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, or hospitals in Singapore, the US… for complicated cases. But for many pregnant women and newborns in Ha Giang, the final hospital could very well be Meo Vac District General Hospital.

It is one of the 7 poorest districts in Ha Giang province and one of the 74 poorest districts in the country. Meo Vac, with its mountainous terrain and difficult transportation, makes access to health services a major challenge, especially for mothers and newborns. Many babies are born in poor conditions, without early essential health care, leading to poor health and high mortality rates. Therefore, the infant mortality rate in Ha Giang has reached an alarming level: nearly 20/1000 children (72.41% higher than the national rate – 11.6/1000 children).
